Let's Talk Guns

In fact, let's talk about 80 percent guns. That's a marketing term used to describe guns that have been manufactured to a certain point ( 80%?) and then sold to be finished by the consumer. There's still work to be done before assembly. These are lowers for the AR 15 and 10 and Glock type handguns. Lowers mean the bottom part of the AR. In other words, no barrel or bolt carrier group. For the Glock type handguns it is the frame, no barrel or slide. These guns were made to let people build their own guns the way they want. It does allow a person to do this, but now "the rest of the story." Once the builder completes the project, they cannot sell (or give away, I believe) the gun. Why? For starters, they just manufactured a gun without a license. All gun manufacturers have a license to do so. This is not the same as the license issued to a gunsmith. It also doesn't have the required markings to be legal. Also, I have been told by a good source ( a gun manufacturer) that they get a couple of guns in each week that need to be fixed because the "builder" didn't know how to put it together correctly. I'm not one to discourage some one from attempting to do some thing, I'm just telling you what the facts are. If all you want to do is see if you can complete the project, go for it. Just expect to lay out some money for the additional parts. Personally, I would rather spend the money for one built by a company that knows what it's doing. Also, there are jigs out there that help with the build, just more money. There are many aftermarket parts, for most any of the big name guns, that will allow you to modify them all you want.

If you've ever visited Gunblast.com, you would know the name Jeff Quinn. Jeff died a couple of months ago and a Texas auction house put some of his guns up on the block. The above SCCY is the one that I ended up with. There's nothing special about it and I guess no one else wanted it. It's a 9mm and the color doesn't bother me. After shooting it a bit, it will probably spend most of it's life laying around the house (just in case). I thought some of the other guns were going for a high price. But, then I'm cheap some times.

I know I've said this before, but I think the range will be finished tomorrow, if the bolts I bought today are long enough. We'll see.

We had three couples over for lunch and karaoke today. Every one seemed to have a good time. We've decided you can't just shut your life down and not do anything. We are just doing it in a smart and safe manner. We will see how things are going, after the first of the year, to see if we will start up karaoke at the Legion. The Senior Center that we go to opened this week. We haven't gone back yet and I don't know when we will. I'm boycotting it, so I'm in no hurry.

Okay, enough for now. Maybe I can get back to publishing more consistently.

As always, take care and stay safe.
